MOOC Course "General Chemistry" by Professor Li Xinxue Launched for International Students
To enrich academic resources for international students and enhance the learning efficiency of our global "Little Shells" (a nickname for USTB students), the International Student Center of the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) has collaborated with the Xueyin Online platform(“学银在线”平台) to launch the MOOC course "General Chemistry," taught by Professor Li Xinxue. The course is now accessible via the "MOOC Center" section on the International Student Center’s official website. International students are welcome to enroll and begin their online learning journey.
Course Title: General Chemistry (32 credit hours)
Lecturer: Prof. Li Xinxue/ University of Science and Technology Beijing/ School of Chemistry and Biological Engineering
Course Overview:
This course is designed primarily for international students in China. While imparting foundational knowledge, it incorporates rich elements of Chinese culture to inspire students’ enthusiasm for learning. Chinese students participating in the course will also benefit significantly. General Chemistry serves as a natural science foundation course for non-chemistry and chemical engineering majors, laying a solid groundwork for cultivating well-rounded talents with comprehensive qualities and innovative mindsets.
Course Content:
The curriculum is divided into four chapters:
Fundamental Principles of Chemical Reactions: Thermodynamic calculations, reaction directionality, chemical equilibrium, and chemical kinetics.
Solution Chemistry: Colligative properties of solutions, acid-base equilibria, buffer solutions, coordination equilibria, solubility equilibria, and precipitation transformations.
Electrochemistry: Principles of galvanic cells, electrolytic cells, and electrochemical corrosion prevention.
Basics of Material Structure: Electron configurations, periodic trends, chemical bonding, intermolecular forces, and crystal structures.
The course also integrates cutting-edge technology, social hot topics, everyday life applications, and chemical knowledge rooted in Chinese culture to showcase the beauty and allure of chemistry.
Target Audience:
This course is tailored for international students in China, particularly first-year science and engineering undergraduates with basic Chinese proficiency and foundational chemistry knowledge. It is also suitable for Chinese undergraduates in non-chemistry and chemical engineering majors seeking a concise general chemistry curriculum.
